Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her maternal grandparents and mother. As a young child, Ford battled obsessive/compulsive disorders and anxiety caused by word associations. Ford's love for acting grew when she was young. She was a part of at the National Youth Theatre. The school she was accepted to was Sylvia Young Theatre School. After a couple of days, she concluded that the school was not suitable for her. Ford applied instead to the Central School of Speech and Drama and eventually secured a position on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler as a regular character on Doctor Who. Ford did not complete her degree in 1993. But, by 1991, Ford had made her first appearance on TV in a show called Surgical Spirit. At that moment, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate appeared in TV programmes such as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London's Burning in the Nineties. Tate was also a regular performer as a theatre actor and was eventually a part of the Royal Shakespeare Company during its season between 2000 and 2001. However, Tate quickly began gaining attention for her stand-up comic and added stand-up comedy to her resume in the year 1996.
